Multiple joints stiff in the morning, worse in the cold and before the rain.
What it looks like: Morning stiffness lasting half an hour or more; Several joints involved, often symmetrically; Swelling in the small joints of the hands or feet; Marked worsening in cold and damp weather; Fatigue that comes with the flare rather than separately.
Where pain is generalised, migratory and comes with fatigue and poor digestion, Ayurveda reads it as Amavata — ama, the residue of incomplete digestion, circulating with Vata and settling in the joints. That is why the treatment begins at the gut and not at the joint, and why an oil massage during an active flare can make things worse rather than better.
A dry, warm approach first: Podi Kizhi with herbal powder boluses, Valuka Swedanam with warm sand, or Jambira Pinda Swedanam where there is stiffness with pain. Internal medicines to restore digestion run from day one. Oil-based therapy is introduced later, once the ama picture has cleared — sequencing that matters more here than the choice of therapy.
Typical course: Planned in stages over several weeks, with diet as a fixed part of it.
When to see a doctor first, not us: A single hot swollen joint with fever, or new joint pain with a rash and marked weight loss, needs a medical diagnosis first. Inflammatory arthritis is managed alongside your rheumatologist, not instead of.
