Warm boluses of medicated herbal powders are applied over the body in rhythmic strokes — a dry-heat therapy for pain, stiffness and swelling.
Podi Kizhi is a bolus therapy in which coarse herbal powders are roasted, tied into cotton bundles and pressed warm over the body. Podi means powder in Malayalam and kizhi a tied bundle; in Sanskrit it is Choorna Pinda Sweda, sudation with a bolus of powder. It belongs to the Kizhi & Sweda family and is one of its drier therapies, warmed with only a little oil — second only to Valuka Swedanam, which uses none.
A session runs about 45–60 minutes. Podi Kizhi is carried out at Sri Vinayaga Ayurvibe, a doctor-led Ayurveda hospital at Nookampalayam, Perumbakkam, Chennai 600131 — within reach of Medavakkam, Sholinganallur, OMR, Pallikaranai, Velachery and Tambaram.
What Podi Kizhi is traditionally used for
Podi Kizhi is traditionally used for joint and muscle pain, stiffness, inflammation and mobility.
Podi Kizhi is traditionally used where pain comes with heaviness and puffiness: joints that are stiff in the morning and swell by evening, knees with osteoarthritis that feel full and tight, and the stiffness of arthritis that worsens in damp weather. It is part of our knee pain and arthritis plans, where a dry approach usually comes before oil-based work.
It is also used outside joint care. For PCOS, weight and metabolism, and a heavy, sluggish digestion, it is planned alongside Udwarthanam and internal medicines, aimed at the dull heaviness the doctor reads as Kapha. In postnatal care it is one of the warm therapies in the 42-day programme, given by female therapists.
What happens in a session
The powders in our Podikizhi Bolus — horse gram, rock salt, turmeric, Nirgundi and Rasna — are dry-roasted and tied in cotton, fresh for each session.
The skin is lightly oiled or left dry, as planned, and the bundles are warmed on a pan with just enough medicated oil to carry the heat.
After testing the heat on their own wrist, the therapist pats the bundle firmly on, then circles it over the joints and strokes it along the limbs.
You feel a dry, slightly gritty warmth, firmer than a leaf bundle; say if a spot is too hot.
Over 45–60 minutes the bundles are rewarmed as they cool, and the powder is brushed off at the end.
Who should not have Podi Kizhi
A joint that has suddenly turned red, hot and very tender, especially with fever; gout or infection can look like this and needs a medical diagnosis first.
Very dry, thin or easily torn skin; a powder bundle is too abrasive, and an oil therapy is chosen instead.
Pregnancy, uncontrolled blood pressure or a heart condition, checked before whole-body heat is planned.
Numbness from diabetes or nerve damage, where a bundle that is too hot may not be felt.
An eczema flare, open wound or fungal rash over the area.
How many sessions?
For knee pain it is usually part of a course of around 14 sessions; for arthritis it belongs to the first, dry stage of a plan staged over several weeks. For weight, metabolism and PCOS it is one piece of a longer plan carried by diet and internal medicine.
If the swelling settles and the joint begins to feel dry and stiff instead, the doctor usually moves the plan on to oil-based therapies such as Elakizhi or Jaanu Vasti.
Before you come
Leave two hours after a meal.
Wear clothes you do not mind marking — turmeric stains.
Tell us about skin that cracks or bleeds easily, and about any recent joint injection or procedure on the knee being treated.
Afterwards
The skin can feel dry and tight, and may keep a faint yellow tint from the turmeric for a day.
Wash with warm water when advised; no cold showers that day.
Keep the joints moving gently that evening — a short, easy walk rather than hours in one chair.
Call us if a patch of skin stays red and sore or blisters. A treated joint that becomes hot, red and more swollen with a fever needs a medical doctor the same day.
Cost
Cost depends on the duration and whether the doctor plans a single session or a course. Call +91 81229 39197 and we will tell you before you book — there are no surprises at the counter.
Only a little — enough for the heat to travel through the bundle while the powder stays mostly dry. Where the doctor wants no oil at all, Valuka Swedanam, with heated sand, is the alternative.
Can I have Podi Kizhi during my period?
Tell us your expected dates when the course is planned. Whole-body heat may be paused on the heaviest days while a session kept to the knees continues; the doctor decides with you.
Is Podi Kizhi painful?
It should not be. The pats are firm and a very stiff joint can feel uncomfortable at first, but the pressure and heat are adjusted to you. A sharp or burning pain is a reason to stop and say so.
