Warm herbal decoction is poured in a continuous stream over the body, traditionally used for inflammatory and skin complaints.
Kashaya Dhara is a continuous pour of warm herbal decoction over the body. Kashaya is the Sanskrit term for a decoction — herbs boiled in water and reduced — and dhara means a steady flow. It belongs to the Dhara family, but unlike Pizhichil it puts no oil on the body, which is why it is chosen when the skin or a swollen joint would not tolerate an oily therapy.
A session runs about 45–60 minutes. Kashaya Dhara is carried out at Sri Vinayaga Ayurvibe, a doctor-led Ayurveda hospital at Nookampalayam, Perumbakkam, Chennai 600131 — within reach of Medavakkam, Sholinganallur, OMR, Pallikaranai, Velachery and Tambaram.
What Kashaya Dhara is traditionally used for
Kashaya Dhara is traditionally used for inflammation, skin complaints, body ache and circulation.
It is traditionally used to support inflamed, itchy or irritated skin, joints that are hot and swollen, general body ache, and sluggish circulation. Here it is used alongside other therapies for Arthritis & joint stiffness and for Psoriasis, eczema & skin.
It is typically planned for people whose complaint has an inflamed or weeping quality, where warm oil would sit heavily on the skin or add to the swelling. The decoction changes with the complaint: a joint that is hot and puffy and skin that itches at night are given different herbs.
What happens in a session
The decoction is boiled from dried herbs, strained, and allowed to come down to a comfortable warmth before you lie down.
You lie on the droni. Only the head is lightly oiled, to protect it; the body itself stays oil-free.
The decoction is poured in a steady stream from the neck down, while a therapist strokes it lightly along the limbs and over the affected areas.
It drains into the droni and is collected and re-warmed, so the temperature stays even for the 45–60 minutes.
It feels lighter and less slippery than an oil therapy, and some people notice a faint bitter, earthy smell from the herbs.
The skin is patted dry rather than rubbed, and you rest before a lukewarm bath.
Who should not have Kashaya Dhara
Open wounds, raw or bleeding patches of skin, or an infected rash.
Fever, or an acute illness that leaves you weak or shivery.
Uncontrolled blood pressure or a heart condition, which the doctor reviews before any dhara.
Pregnancy, until the doctor has assessed whether and how it can be given.
A known reaction to herbal preparations; the doctor may try the decoction on a small patch of skin first.
Diabetes with reduced sensation in the legs, which means the temperature is checked more often and kept on the cooler side.
How many sessions?
Kashaya Dhara is usually planned as a course of 7 to 14 sessions and is rarely useful as a one-off. For skin complaints it runs alongside internal medicines and a diet, and the doctor reviews the skin at intervals rather than waiting for the end of the course.
For joint complaints it is often one stage in a longer plan, given while the joints are hot and swollen and followed by other therapies once the doctor judges the swelling has settled enough.
Before you come
If you use a prescribed cream or ointment, bring it and ask the doctor about timing on session days; do not stop it on your own.
Wear loose, dark clothing you do not mind marking, as some decoctions colour fabric.
Come about two hours after a light meal.
Tell us about any new rash, cut or sore since your last visit, so the therapist can avoid it.
Afterwards
The skin may feel slightly tight or dry for a few hours; the doctor will tell you whether to apply anything.
Use a mild cleanser or none on the day, and avoid hot showers, which dry the skin further.
Keep out of strong sun and try not to scratch the treated areas.
Call +91 81229 39197 if the skin becomes red, hot and itchier after a session. A spreading rash with fever, blistering, or swelling of the face or lips needs emergency care at once.
Cost
Cost depends on the duration and whether the doctor plans a single session or a course. Call +91 81229 39197 and we will tell you before you book — there are no surprises at the counter.
Oil holds warmth and moisture in the tissues, which suits dry, stiff, cold complaints. A decoction leaves no such film, so it is chosen when the problem is already hot, swollen or weeping and oil would make it feel heavier.
Can it be given on one area only?
Yes, where that suits the complaint. A pour limited to the knees or the hands is shorter and simpler to arrange, and the doctor decides whether the whole body or one region is treated.
Could it make my skin flare?
A brief increase in redness or itching can happen in the first sessions. Report it, and the doctor may change the decoction or pause. Skin that keeps getting worse is a reason to stop the course, not to push on.
