Ayurvedic treatment for back pain in Chennai

Lower back pain that has outlasted rest, tablets and a few physiotherapy sessions.

What it looks like: A dull ache across the lower back that is worst on waking; Pain that sharpens when you bend forward or lift; Stiffness after sitting for an hour or more; Spasm that locks the back for a day or two at a time.

Ayurveda reads most long-running low back pain as a Vata disorder of the lumbar region — dryness and irregular movement in the tissues around the spine, which is why it is worse in the cold, worse in the morning, and better with warmth and oil. Where there is swelling and burning rather than stiffness, the picture is different and the treatment changes accordingly.

The mainstay is Kati Vasti: a dough ring is built on the lower back and warm medicated oil is held inside it, directly over the affected segment, for about half an hour. That localised heat and oleation does what a whole-body massage cannot. Where there is muscle spasm across the region, Elakizhi or Naadi Swedanam is added; where a disc is involved, the doctor reviews the imaging before any heat is applied at all.

Typical course: Usually 7 to 14 sessions on consecutive days, reviewed midway.

When to see a doctor first, not us: Numbness in the groin or inner thighs, loss of bladder or bowel control, sudden leg weakness, or back pain following a fall or with fever and weight loss — go to a hospital the same day rather than booking a therapy.

Common questions

Can Ayurveda help a slipped disc?
Ayurvedic therapy is used for the pain, spasm and stiffness that accompany disc disease, and many patients get useful relief. It does not reposition a disc. The doctor reviews your MRI or X-ray before planning anything, and will tell you plainly when a surgical opinion is the right next step.
How many Kati Vasti sessions will I need?
Most plans run 7 to 14 consecutive days, with a review in the middle. Long-standing pain sometimes needs a second course after a gap, which is decided at the review rather than promised at the start.
Is Kati Vasti painful?
No. You lie face down and warm oil is held on the lower back — most patients find it the most comfortable part of their day. The oil is kept at a temperature you confirm is comfortable, and it is topped up as it cools.
