Warm medicated oil is continuously squeezed from cloth over the body while two therapists massage in rhythm — a classical Kerala therapy often used before Panchakarma.
Pizhichil is a whole-body therapy in which warm medicated oil is squeezed from soaked cloths over you while two therapists massage in rhythm. The name is Malayalam, from the word for squeezing; Sanskrit texts call it Kayaseka, pouring over the body. It sits in the Dhara family because the oil arrives as a stream, and it combines oiling and warmth in one session.
A session runs about 60–90 minutes. Pizhichil is carried out at Sri Vinayaga Ayurvibe, a doctor-led Ayurveda hospital at Nookampalayam, Perumbakkam, Chennai 600131 — within reach of Medavakkam, Sholinganallur, OMR, Pallikaranai, Velachery and Tambaram.
What Pizhichil is traditionally used for
Pizhichil is traditionally used for deep nourishment of the tissues, body pain, joint stiffness and deep relaxation.
It is traditionally used to support a body that is stiff, aching and dry: back and leg pain, joints that are slow to move, weakness after a long illness, and the depletion Ayurveda describes as aggravated Vata. Here it is part of the plans for Back pain, Sciatica and Frozen shoulder.
It is also one of the therapies used to prepare for Panchakarma, when the body is oiled and warmed over several days so that the main procedures, such as Kashaya Vasti, can follow. It is planned for adults who can lie for over an hour and turn between positions with help.
What happens in a session
Your head is oiled and a band is tied at the hairline, which keeps the body oil away from your face and eyes.
The oil — often Dhanwantharam Thailam from our pharmacy, or another chosen for your complaint — is kept warm in a vessel beside the droni.
A therapist on each side lifts a cloth from the warm oil and wrings it out above you, so the oil runs down the limbs while the free hand strokes it along. Working in step, they keep both sides equally warm.
You are turned through positions — seated, on your back, on each side and face-down. It feels like lying under warm rain that does not cool; say at once if any part feels too hot.
The session runs 60–90 minutes, and you rest so the body cools slowly before the warm-water bath.
Who should not have Pizhichil
Fever, a cold, diarrhoea or indigestion; oiling the body over an unsettled digestion is classically avoided.
Heart conditions, uncontrolled blood pressure or marked breathlessness — an hour or more on the droni is demanding.
Broken, infected or weeping skin, a fresh injury or a recent operation wound.
Pregnancy, where the doctor decides whether a gentler therapy is more appropriate.
A heavy, congested state with swelling and low appetite, where oil would add to the heaviness; Udwarthanam may come first.
How many sessions?
Pizhichil is planned as a course, usually 7, 14 or 21 days. For back pain or sciatica it sits inside a wider plan that may include Kati Vasti and, where the doctor judges it right, a Vasti course.
As preparation for Panchakarma, the number of days depends on how your body responds to the oiling, which Dr.V.Vaitheeshwari B.A.M.S., checks each day — skin, appetite, stools and energy. It ends when those signs say you are ready, not on a fixed date.
Before you come
Allow about two hours for the whole visit, including rest and the bath.
Eat lightly at least two hours before, and keep oily or heavy food off the menu that day.
Wear old clothes and bring a change; medicated oil marks fabric for good.
If you are preparing for Panchakarma, follow the diet and internal medicine schedule the doctor has given you.
Afterwards
Many people feel warm, loose and sleepy, and a few feel weak or thirsty; sip warm water and rest.
Keep out of wind, fans and air-conditioning that day, and do not take a cold bath.
Once you are hungry, eat something warm and simple such as kanji.
Call +91 81229 39197 if you feel faint, have palpitations, or a rash appears where the oil was. Chest pain or breathlessness that does not settle with rest needs emergency care immediately.
Cost
Cost depends on the duration and whether the doctor plans a single session or a course. Call +91 81229 39197 and we will tell you before you book — there are no surprises at the counter.
How is Pizhichil different from Shareera Abhyangam?
In Abhyangam the oil is a medium for the hands. In Pizhichil the oil is the treatment: far more is used, it is kept warm throughout, and the hands mainly spread it. It is also longer and more demanding.
Is Pizhichil the same as Panchakarma?
No. Panchakarma is a set of purification procedures. Pizhichil is one of the ways the body is prepared for them, and it is also given on its own, with no purification at all, for pain and stiffness.
Can I break the course for travel?
Plan travel around the dates before you start. A course runs on consecutive days, and a long gap, especially during preparation for Panchakarma, may mean the doctor repeats part of it.
