A continuous stream of warm medicated oil poured rhythmically over the forehead — one of the most widely prescribed Kerala therapies for a restless mind and poor sleep.
Shirodhara is a single, slow stream of warm medicated oil poured onto the forehead while you lie still. The name joins two Sanskrit words: shiras, the head, and dhara, a continuous flow. It belongs to the Dhara family of therapies, in which one liquid is poured without a break for the length of the session. In Shirodhara that liquid is oil, and it falls on the forehead only, never over the body.
A session runs about 45–60 minutes. Shirodhara is carried out at Sri Vinayaga Ayurvibe, a doctor-led Ayurveda hospital at Nookampalayam, Perumbakkam, Chennai 600131 — within reach of Medavakkam, Sholinganallur, OMR, Pallikaranai, Velachery and Tambaram.
What Shirodhara is traditionally used for
Shirodhara is traditionally used for deep relaxation, anxiety and poor sleep, mental fatigue and nervous tension.
It is traditionally used to support a mind that will not settle: difficulty falling asleep, waking in the small hours, nervous tension and the tiredness that follows weeks of poor rest. Here it is part of the plans for Insomnia & poor sleep, Stress, anxiety & burnout and Migraine & headache, and for Acidity & reflux where the burning comes with worry.
It is typically planned for adults whose sleep or stress has lasted weeks rather than days, and who can lie on their back for most of an hour. Many work long screen hours or rotating shifts, and some combine it with a neck therapy such as Greeva Vasti.
What happens in a session
You lie on your back on the droni with a support under your neck and a pad over your eyes.
The oil — often Brahmi Dhara Taila from our pharmacy, or another the doctor chooses — is warmed a little above skin temperature and checked against the therapist’s own skin first.
The vessel hangs about a hand-span above your brow, and you feel a thin thread of warmth landing between the eyebrows and sweeping slowly from temple to temple.
The oil is collected from the hair, re-warmed and returned to the vessel, so the stream does not break. Many people drift into a light sleep, and the therapist stays beside you throughout.
Afterwards you lie still for a few minutes before sitting up slowly. The visit takes 45–60 minutes, plus the head bath.
Who should not have Shirodhara
A fever, a fresh cold or a blocked, streaming nose; oil on the head waits until it has passed.
Uncontrolled blood pressure or a heart condition, which the doctor checks before planning a course.
A recent head injury, or a wound or infection on the scalp.
Recent eye surgery or an eye infection, since a little oil can run towards the eyes.
Pregnancy, where the doctor decides whether and how to give it after asking about the stage.
How many sessions?
Shirodhara is rarely planned as a single sitting. For sleep and stress the usual plan is 7 to 14 sessions, on consecutive days or across two to three weeks. Dr.V.Vaitheeshwari B.A.M.S., reviews your sleep after the first week and decides whether to continue, pause or change the oil.
A single session is possible if you want to know what it feels like first, but on its own it is not a treatment plan.
Before you come
Wash your hair the evening before rather than that morning.
Take out contact lenses, earrings and hair clips.
Tell us about any new medicine for sleep, anxiety or blood pressure since your consultation — we adjust the session, not your prescription.
Afterwards
Expect to feel slow and quiet for an hour or two. Some people sleep earlier that night; others notice little at first.
Some oil stays in the hair after the head bath. Wash it out at home with warm water and a mild cleanser, never cold water.
Keep the rest of the day unhurried, with no gym, little screen time and a simple, warm dinner.
Call +91 81229 39197 if dizziness lasts or a headache follows a session. A sudden, severe headache with vomiting, weakness or confusion is an emergency — go to a hospital straight away.
Cost
Cost depends on the duration and whether the doctor plans a single session or a course. Call +91 81229 39197 and we will tell you before you book — there are no surprises at the counter.
No. Only the forehead receives the stream. Warm oil over the whole body is Pizhichil, and medicated milk over the body is Ksheera Dhara; the doctor chooses between them by what you are coming for.
Why is the oil not the same for everyone?
It is matched to the pattern behind the complaint: someone who wakes hot and irritable at midnight is usually given a more cooling oil than someone who lies awake cold and restless.
Can I have it during my period?
Tell us when your period is due when you book a course. The doctor may continue as planned or pause on the heavier days; it is decided for you rather than by a fixed rule.
