Falling asleep late, waking at three, or sleeping the hours and waking unrested.
What it looks like: Lying awake with a mind that will not slow down; Waking between 2 and 4 AM and not getting back; Sleeping seven hours and waking tired; Needing a screen or a drink to get to sleep; Daytime irritability and poor concentration.
Ayurveda separates the insomnias. A Vata pattern cannot fall asleep and wakes in the small hours with a racing mind; a Pitta pattern falls asleep and wakes hot around midnight with the day's arguments replaying. They are aggravated by different things and settled by different oils, which is why the first consultation asks when you wake rather than only whether you sleep.
Shirodhara is the central therapy: a continuous stream of warm oil on the forehead for 45 minutes, which does something to the nervous system that no tablet does — it drops it out of alert. Takra Dhara, with medicated buttermilk instead of oil, is used for the hot, Pitta presentation. Thalapothichil, a cooling herbal paste held on the scalp, is added where anxiety dominates. Sleep timing and evening routine are part of the plan, not advice tacked on the end.
Typical course: 7 to 14 sessions. Most patients report a change within the first week.
When to see a doctor first, not us: Loud snoring with witnessed pauses in breathing, or overwhelming daytime sleepiness, points to sleep apnoea and needs a sleep study — Shirodhara will not treat it.
