Warm boluses of lemon and herbs fried in medicated oil are massaged over the body, traditionally used for long-standing pain and stiffness.
Jambira Pinda Swedanam is a bolus therapy in which lemons are chopped and fried with herbs in medicated oil, tied into cloth bundles and massaged warm over the body. Jambira is Sanskrit for lemon, pinda means bolus and swedanam means sudation, so the name says what it is: heat given through a lemon bolus. In Kerala it is also called Naranga Kizhi, and it belongs to the Kizhi & Sweda family.
A session runs about 45–60 minutes. Jambira Pinda Swedanam is carried out at Sri Vinayaga Ayurvibe, a doctor-led Ayurveda hospital at Nookampalayam, Perumbakkam, Chennai 600131 — within reach of Medavakkam, Sholinganallur, OMR, Pallikaranai, Velachery and Tambaram.
What Jambira Pinda Swedanam is traditionally used for
Jambira Pinda Swedanam is traditionally used for long-standing pain, muscle spasm, joint movement and neck and back stiffness.
It is traditionally used to support pain and stiffness that are long-standing rather than new: a neck and upper back stiff for months, a lower back that catches with spasm, and joints in arthritis that are stiff as well as painful. On our arthritis plans it is one of the warm first-stage therapies.
The sour, sharp quality of lemon is traditionally chosen for pain that is dull, heavy and cold rather than burning. It is typically planned for adults with chronic muscle spasm, or with stiffness from posture or an old sports strain once the acute phase has passed.
What happens in a session
Lemons are cut small and fried in medicated oil with turmeric, rock salt and other herbs the doctor chooses, then tied into cloth bundles.
Medicated oil is applied over the area or the whole body, and the bundles are reheated in a pan of oil.
The therapist pats the bundle on, then works it in firm circles over stiff joints and along tight muscles, spending longest where the doctor has marked.
You notice a sharp citrus smell and a tingling warmth; tell the therapist at once if anything stings.
Over 45–60 minutes the bundles are reheated as they cool. The oil is wiped off and you rest before washing.
Who should not have Jambira Pinda Swedanam
Cuts, cracked heels, eczema or any broken skin over the area — lemon juice stings and can irritate it.
A citrus allergy, or skin that turns red and itchy with lemon or turmeric.
A joint that is hot, red and burning, or a body that already runs hot with acidity and rashes; the doctor considers a cooling therapy instead.
Blood thinners or a bleeding tendency, since firm bolus strokes can bruise; the pressure is lightened or another therapy chosen.
Fever, pregnancy, a heart condition or uncontrolled blood pressure, which the doctor checks before planning it.
How many sessions?
It is usually a course of 7 to 14 days, or one phase of a longer arthritis plan staged over several weeks.
The doctor weighs how long the pain has been there, whether the joint is warm or cold to the touch, and how your skin takes the lemon in the first session or two. If your skin reacts, you are moved to another bolus therapy rather than pressing on.
Before you come
Check your hands, feet and the areas to be treated for small cuts or hangnails and tell us — they will sting.
Do not shave or wax the area the day before; freshly shaved skin is more sensitive to lemon.
Eat lightly two hours before, and bring a change of clothes.
Afterwards
A mild tingle or slight redness that fades within a few hours is expected. Itching, raised welts or burning that does not fade is not — call us.
Keep the treated skin out of strong sun for the rest of the day; lemon on the skin followed by sunlight can leave a burn or dark patches.
Wash with warm water when advised, and keep the treated areas away from AC vents and fans.
If back pain spreads down a leg with numbness or weakness, see a medical doctor promptly.
Cost
Cost depends on the duration and whether the doctor plans a single session or a course. Call +91 81229 39197 and we will tell you before you book — there are no surprises at the counter.
Both are oil-fried bundles massaged warm. Elakizhi is built on leaves; this one on lemon, whose sour, penetrating quality is traditionally chosen for chronic, dull, heavy pain. The doctor may use both within one course.
Can I have it if I suffer from acidity?
The lemon on your skin does not reach your stomach. The doctor still asks about acidity, because in Ayurveda a strong tendency to heat and burning can point to a cooler therapy — your overall constitution decides, not the lemon itself.
My skin is sensitive. Can I try it first?
Yes. Ask for a small patch of skin to be tried with a warm bundle before the full session. If it stays calm, the session goes ahead; if it turns red or itchy, the doctor chooses another therapy.
