Valuka Swedanam in Chennai

Heated sand poultices are applied over affected areas — a dry fomentation traditionally used for swollen, inflamed joints where oil is not wanted.

Valuka Swedanam is a dry heat therapy in which clean sand is heated, tied into cloth bundles and pressed over painful, swollen joints, with no oil at all. Valuka is Sanskrit for sand and swedanam means sudation, the inducing of warmth and sweat. It belongs to the Kizhi & Sweda family as one of its ruksha, or dry, forms, and is the therapy the doctor turns to when oil would make a joint feel heavier.

A session runs about 30–45 minutes. Valuka Swedanam is carried out at Sri Vinayaga Ayurvibe, a doctor-led Ayurveda hospital at Nookampalayam, Perumbakkam, Chennai 600131 — within reach of Medavakkam, Sholinganallur, OMR, Pallikaranai, Velachery and Tambaram.

What Valuka Swedanam is traditionally used for

Valuka Swedanam is traditionally used for joint swelling, rheumatoid complaints, pain that eases with dry heat and joint function.

Valuka Swedanam is traditionally used to support joints that are swollen, puffy and stiff: rheumatoid-type complaints where swelling moves between joints (alongside your rheumatologist’s care), knees and ankles that feel heavy and full, and morning stiffness that is worse in cold, damp weather. On our arthritis plans it belongs to the first, dry stage, before oil-based therapy is brought in.

In Ayurveda this kind of swelling is read as ama with Kapha, and oil is held back while internal medicines work on digestion. Valuka Swedanam is typically planned for people with that picture, and for those whose joints or skin have not taken well to oil therapies in the past.

What happens in a session

  1. Sand is heated in an open pan until it is hot to the hand, then tied tightly into cotton bundles so none escapes.
  2. You sit or lie with only the joints being treated uncovered, and the skin is left as it is — no oil, cream or balm.
  3. The therapist touches the bundle on lightly at first, because sand holds heat well, then presses and circles it over and around each joint, moving between joints so none is overheated.
  4. The warmth is dry and deep, and you may sweat lightly over the area. Say so if any spot stings or feels too hot.
  5. Bundles are swapped and re-heated through the 30–45 minutes, and the skin is wiped dry and covered straight away.

How many sessions?

It is usually given daily over a run of about 7 to 14 days and then reviewed. In arthritis, where the plan is staged over several weeks, it may return in a later stage if swelling comes back.

The doctor judges the timing from the joint itself. If the swelling and heaviness ease and the joint begins to feel dry and stiff instead, the plan moves on to oil-based therapies such as Elakizhi or Jaanu Vasti.

Common questions

Why sand and not oil?
Oil adds moisture and heaviness, which suits a dry, stiff joint but not a puffy, swollen one. Sand carries heat without leaving anything on the skin, so the joint gets warmth alone.
Can I use a hot sand bag at home?
Please do not improvise. Sand heated in a home kitchen easily gets far hotter than it feels through the cloth, and burns happen quickly on older or diabetic skin. If heat at home would help between sessions, the doctor will tell you what to use and for how long.
Will I sweat all over?
No. Valuka Swedanam is local, so any sweating is mostly over the joints treated. Whole-body sweating is the role of Baspa Sweda, the steam chamber.
