A gentle stream of warm medicated milk poured over the body or forehead — cooling, and traditionally used in stress and Pitta-related complaints.
Ksheera Dhara is a slow stream of warm medicated milk, poured either over the forehead or over the body. Ksheera is Sanskrit for milk and dhara for a continuous flow. The milk is boiled with herbs and water until the water has gone, so the herbs are carried in the milk itself. It is one of the gentlest liquids in the Dhara family, chosen for its cooling, softening quality.
A session runs about 45–60 minutes. Ksheera Dhara is carried out at Sri Vinayaga Ayurvibe, a doctor-led Ayurveda hospital at Nookampalayam, Perumbakkam, Chennai 600131 — within reach of Medavakkam, Sholinganallur, OMR, Pallikaranai, Velachery and Tambaram.
What Ksheera Dhara is traditionally used for
Ksheera Dhara is traditionally used for heat and burning sensations, stress, dry skin and a restless mind.
It is traditionally used to support heat and burning sensations, dry and rough skin, a restless or overworked mind, and headaches that come with heat and tiredness. Here it is used alongside other therapies for Insomnia & poor sleep and for Migraine & headache.
It is typically planned for people with a heated, sensitive constitution who find oil too heavy, and for those who are tired and depleted rather than congested. When the complaint sits in the head and the mind, the stream is directed at the forehead; when it is in the skin and the body, it is poured over the body.
What happens in a session
Because medicated milk spoils quickly, it is prepared fresh for each session and strained just before use.
For a forehead session you lie on your back with your eyes covered and the stream falls across the brow. For a body session the milk is poured from the neck down while a therapist spreads it along the limbs.
The milk is kept warm, never hot, and feels softer and lighter on the skin than oil does.
It is collected and re-warmed as it runs off, so the flow stays even for the 45–60 minutes.
You are wiped down, rest briefly, and bathe in lukewarm water to rinse the milk off before it dries.
Who should not have Ksheera Dhara
A cold, cough, blocked sinuses or an asthma flare — milk is classically avoided when the body is congested.
An allergy to milk; tell us even if you have only reacted when drinking it.
Indigestion, a heavy stomach or loose motions on the day.
Fever, or a skin infection or open wound where the milk would run.
Pregnancy or uncontrolled blood pressure, which the doctor checks before any dhara.
How many sessions?
Ksheera Dhara is usually given as a course of 7 to 14 sessions, often on consecutive days. For sleep or headaches it is one part of a plan that may also include Shirodhara or Thalapothichil.
The doctor decides between a forehead and a body course at consultation, and may move from one to the other after the first week depending on how you respond.
Before you come
Avoid a heavy, oily meal beforehand; come about two hours after something light.
For a forehead session, plan to wash your hair the same day — milk left in the hair overnight smells sour.
For a body session, bring a change of clothes.
Skip perfume, deodorant and body lotion on the day.
Afterwards
Many people feel cool, calm and drowsy, and the skin often feels soft for the rest of the day.
Bathe in lukewarm water, not cold, and do not sit under a fan or air-conditioner with damp hair.
Keep dinner light and warm, and leave out curd and cold desserts that evening.

No. The milk is medicated, it is poured in a continuous stream rather than sat in, and its temperature is held steady throughout. It is planned by the doctor for a specific complaint, not chosen as a beauty treatment.
Can it be combined with Shirodhara in one course?
Sometimes. The doctor may alternate warm oil and warm milk across a course, or move from one to the other as the season or your complaint changes.
Does the type of milk matter?
Classically, cow’s milk is used. If you avoid animal products for personal or religious reasons, say so at consultation and the doctor will suggest another dhara.
Is it suitable for older people?
Often, yes. Its warmth is mild and it is less tiring than an oil dhara, so it is sometimes chosen for older patients who find longer, heavier therapies demanding. Blood pressure and mobility are checked first.
