Warm medicated oil pooled along the spine within a dough boundary, traditionally used for the muscles and nerves of the back.
Prishta Vasti is a localised oil therapy for the back. Prishta is Sanskrit for the back, and the vasti is the container: a long boundary of dough is built along the spine and filled with warm medicated oil, which is held over the back muscles and the nerves along the spine. It is a larger relative of Kati Vasti, which covers only the lower back, and it is not an enema.
A session runs about 30–45 minutes. Prishta Vasti is carried out at Sri Vinayaga Ayurvibe, a doctor-led Ayurveda hospital at Nookampalayam, Perumbakkam, Chennai 600131 — within reach of Medavakkam, Sholinganallur, OMR, Pallikaranai, Velachery and Tambaram.
What Prishta Vasti is traditionally used for
Prishta Vasti is traditionally used for back pain, spinal nerve complaints, postural strain and muscle spasm.
It is traditionally used for back pain spread along the spine rather than fixed at one spot: postural strain between the shoulder blades, stiffness through the middle and lower back, muscle spasm and nerve-related aching. In women’s health it is used for the lower-back and pelvic ache that can come with painful periods and in the weeks after childbirth.
The doctor typically plans it for people who sit or stand in one posture for long hours, older adults who are stiff across several levels of the spine, and mothers within the postnatal programme. Internal medicines such as Yogaraja Guggulu may be prescribed alongside after consultation.
What happens in a session
You lie face down with a pillow under the abdomen, and the therapist marks the stretch of spine the doctor has asked for.
Black-gram dough is laid in a strip on each side of the spine and joined at both ends, making a narrow channel that may run from between the shoulder blades to the base of the back.
Warm medicated oil fills the channel. Because the area is long, the therapist works along it, drawing off cooled oil and adding warmer oil so no part goes cold.
You lie still for the 30–45 minutes, with an even warmth along the spine.
The dough is lifted away, the back is massaged in long strokes, and you are helped onto your side before sitting up.
Who should not have Prishta Vasti
Back pain with fever, unexplained weight loss, a history of cancer, or pain that wakes you at night. These need investigation first.
A recent spinal fracture, or bones known to be thin, until an orthopaedic doctor has advised.
Acne, boils, a rash or broken skin along the back.
Pregnancy, and the weeks after a caesarean until lying face down is comfortable and your obstetrician is satisfied with the scar.
A back that is hot, red or burning rather than stiff and cold, where a cooler therapy may suit better.
How many sessions?
Prishta Vasti is usually given as a course on consecutive days, its length set after the doctor has examined your back and read any imaging. For postural pain the plan is often short and paired with changes to how you sit and work.
In women’s health it is timed. Within the postnatal programme it recurs across the six weeks, and for painful periods the sessions are placed at set points in your cycle rather than run continuously.
Before you come
Wear an old shirt; the oil spreads across a wide area.
Bring any X-ray or MRI of your spine.
If you are breastfeeding, feed or express shortly before the session, since lying face down on full breasts is uncomfortable.
Note the date of your last period so sessions can be planned around it.
Afterwards
The back may feel heavy and warm, and you may want to lie down for a while at home.
Keep the back covered, and avoid a cold bath or sitting under a fan or AC vent that day.
Avoid heavy lifting for a day, including carrying a toddler on one hip more than you must.
Call us if pain moves into a leg, you develop a fever, or the skin on your back turns itchy or spotty.
Cost
Cost depends on the duration and whether the doctor plans a single session or a course. Call +91 81229 39197 and we will tell you before you book — there are no surprises at the counter.
Kati Vasti holds oil over one small area of the lower back, where one or two segments are involved. Prishta Vasti covers a long stretch of the spine, for pain or stiffness across several levels. The examination decides which.
My pain is between the shoulder blades. Is that a back problem?
Often it is postural. But pain there can also come from the heart, the gallbladder or the stomach. If it comes with chest discomfort, breathlessness, sweating or nausea, go to an emergency department rather than booking a therapy.
Is it suitable if I have a curved spine?
Often, yes. The dough channel follows the line of your spine, and pillows are adjusted so you lie level. A curve that is getting worse should also be assessed by a spine specialist.
